On May 12, the AAMC submitted comments on the proposed framework to guide the National Institutes of Health (NIH) strategic plan for fiscal years 2027–2031, addressing research priorities, capacity, and operations. AAMC CHARGE contributed in part to the input that informed the AAMC's response.
The letter emphasized NIH’s critical role in funding research and urged evaluation of recent funding changes. It highlighted the need to sustain a strong biomedical workforce by supporting researchers at all career stages, including new investigators. The AAMC also stressed the importance of expert peer review, meaningful engagement with patients and communities, and clear evaluation metrics to ensure progress toward NIH’s goals.
